Breed History
HASHKI HAVANESE
The Havanese is a very endearing long coated small companion dog that
comes from Cuba.  These dogs love the attention of their owners, they
love being around people including children.  In the show ring they love to
perform for an audience and can be a little clownish.

There are many theories about how the Havanese came into being.
Unfortunately, like many small dogs in war-torn areas these little dogs
faced extinction.  Due to the diligence of several people we can still enjoy
these little dogs.  In the early 1970s an American who got these dogs
from excelled Cubans rescued 11.  This was the beginning of the
American lines.  From these lines the progeny went to Europe.  In 1991
the Cuban Havanese club was started and a census was done to see
how many Havanese were left in Cuba, 15 remained.  With careful
breeding this number has now increased.  The first dog was exported
from Cuba in 1997 to the Netherlands.

The history in Australia started in 2000 when the first two dogs were
imported to Australia, one male form the U.S.A. and a female from the
Netherlands.  Progeny from the first mating produced the first Australian
Grand Champion, a New Zealand Champion and several Best in group,
Best In Show and show and class group winners.  The second litter was
equally successful.  In 1992 another three dogs came into the country,
two males and one female from Sweden.  In 2003 a male and a female
came in from the U.S.A., and in 2005 another male has come in from the
U.S.A.   Progeny from all these combinations have produced quality show
dogs that are being successfully exhibited Australia wide and in New
Zealand.

As you can see the gene pool in Australia is very small.  But, in saying
this combinations of these lines have produce some very good quality
show dogs and recently several more imports have come into the country
from Canada and Europe. These imported lines have produced many
colour combinations such as black, black and white, black and tan, black
and silver, chocolate, chocolate and cream, chocolate and white, red, red
sable, silver sable, gold, white, cream, champagne and true parties.

This little breed has also been very popular with the general public.  They
make wonderful pets. They seem to know what you are thinking and
anticipate your every move.  They are easily trained and great with
children.  Because most breeders in Australia are diligent in testing for
heredity diseases pet owners from Hong Kong, New Zealand and Hawaii
are acquiring dogs from Australia.

Numbers are growing in Australia as the breed becomes better known,
and now the future looks bright for this lovely little companion dog.
